Tracking Down an Air Leak: Repairing a Right Front Brake Chamber Issue

Overview

Not all air leaks are obvious, but even a “small” leak can grow into a serious safety concern and cause air system problems. In this recent case, RMTC was called to investigate a persistent air leak at the right front brake chamber.

Customer Concern

The driver heard a steady air leak near the right front wheel and noticed the air system cycling more frequently than normal. They pulled over and requested roadside assistance before the issue worsened.

Breakdown Location

The vehicle was parked in a safe pull‑off area, allowing our technician to thoroughly inspect the air system.

Diagnosis

Our technician:

  • Conducted a visual and audible inspection around the right front brake chamber.
  • Used a soapy solution to help pinpoint the exact leak point.
  • Confirmed there was an air leak at the right front brake chamber, related to the air line and/or its connection.

This type of leak can reduce brake effectiveness and strain the air system compressor.

Repair Story

To properly address the problem:

  1. The truck was safely secured and chocked before any work began.
  2. The technician inspected the air line, fittings, and brake chamber ports at the right front wheel.
  3. Replaced the worn or damaged components responsible for the leak (such as an air line section, fitting, or seal).
  4. Reassembled the connection using correct torque and verified alignment.
  5. Re‑pressurized the system and checked for residual leaks.
  6. Tested brake application and release at the right front wheel to confirm proper operation.

Result for the Customer

The driver left with a tight air system, restored brake performance, and fewer compressor cycles, which helps reduce wear and fuel consumption over time.

Before

Visible or audible air leak at the brake chamber connection point.

After

Clean, secure connection with no leaks detected during testing.
