Air Line Failure at Brake Chamber: Fast Fix, Safe Stopping Power

Overview

Your air brake system is critical to vehicle safety. When there’s an issue at a brake chamber, the truck shouldn’t be driven until it’s fixed correctly. RMTC recently assisted a driver with exactly this issue at the right front brake chamber.

Customer Concern

The driver reported an air leak and abnormal air pressure behavior and chose to stop the truck rather than risk braking performance.

Diagnosis

Once on site, our technician:

  • Performed an air system inspection, listening and testing for leaks.
  • Focused on the right front brake chamber, where the driver initially heard the problem.
  • Identified a broken air line fitting at the right front brake chamber that was causing a notable air leak.

This compromised the reliability of the front brake at that wheel and required immediate repair.

Repair Story

To restore safe brake operation:

  1. The truck was secured with proper safety measures, including chocking wheels and following lockout/tagout procedures where applicable.
  2. The technician removed the damaged air line fitting from the right front brake chamber.
  3. Inspected the air line for additional wear or damage.
  4. Installed a new fitting rated for the application and reconnected the line.
  5. Pressurized the system and performed a leak test to verify an airtight seal.
  6. Confirmed proper brake application and release at the right front wheel.
  7. Completed a final walk-around air system check for additional issues.

Result for the Customer

The driver regained full confidence in the braking system and was able to continue safely, avoiding a tow and more extensive downtime.
